At less than an hour from Geneva, Samoëns itself is one of the most beautiful ski resorts you could ever visit. Dating back to the 13th Century, it was once a thriving stone cutting centre and it still retains many features from this era. The village has a botanical garden, gothic church, medieval squares, timber-fronted patisseries and picture-box houses making it one of the prettiest of the Alpine resorts. It carries the designation of a “ville fleurie” distinguishing it as one of the prettiest villages in France and is, in fact, the only ski resort in France to be listed as a historical and artistic monument.
But it’s not just about being nice to look at. Samoens has been tastefully developed to provide all the facilities you would expect in a modern ski resort, so there is a good selection of shops, café bars, restaurants and other facilities to ensure your stay isn’t just about the time you spend on the slopes but about enjoying the time off them too.
This means that non-skiers can enjoy their time in Samoens or it makes a great place to take an afternoon off and chill out in the town itself. Visit the ice-rink perhaps, watch a film at the cinema, or just potter around the shops and then savour some Vin Chaud at one of the bars in the town centre. On Wednesday mornings there is the most fantastic market, for over 500 years it has been market day in Samoens, clustered around the lime tree in the main square and through the narrow streets. Bring back hand-painted china, interior furnishings, cheese, local hams, wine or leather goods.
For Savoyard charm and stunning backdrops, this is the place. And do not be put off by its lowly height. Although set in a glacial valley at only 700 metres above sea level, it is, courtesy of a new high-speed gondola, just eight minutes from the high-altitude Grand Massive ski area (think Flaine, Les Carroz and Morillon). Here, 265km of pistes and 75 lifts offer some of the most consistent snow cover and varied skiing in the Alps.
