Villa at May Park II offers one of the valley’s most interesting blends of traditional and contemporary mountain style and design. The home’s desirable location, next to May Park in East Jackson, from which downtown is a 20-minute walk and hiking and biking trailheads are even closer, is ideal for those looking to experience Jackson’s cowboy cosmopolitanism.

Locally renowned architect Larry Berlin designed this 2,200 square foot home to be contemporary—think lots of glass, open living spaces, stained concrete floors (that are heated, naturally), and exposed steel. It’s mountain modern at its best. When it came to filling this architectural form with furniture, accessories, and art though, the owners and interior designer brought in traditional Jackson Hole design elements like overstuffed leather club chairs and sofas, Native American area rugs, and Western and wildlife art. They did this in a way in which the two styles complement each other rather than compete, resulting in a cozy contemporary aesthetic. This is a home you just want to hang out in.

In the downstairs guest bedrooms, especially the one with two twin beds, the art is less formal while still focused on wildlife. Both of the guest rooms, which share a generously sized bathroom, benefit from the same design attributes of this home’s public spaces: lots of natural light, and an efficiency of space.

The star of the master suite—not counting the Cawdrey painting hanging over the king size bed—is an oversized walk-in shower. Here you can sit on a tiled, built-in bench and let your muscles recover from the day’s adventures as hot water washes over you.

As you climb the stairs from the bedrooms, the eye is drawn to a giant painting of a moose hanging above the fireplace in the second-floor combined living/dining room and kitchen. But, painted by Nancy Dunlop Cawdrey, it is not of a moose as found in nature. Cawdrey’s palette is bright with jewel tones and her use of an ancient technique of painting on silk feels modern. The subject matter of her work is Western, but the style is not. (Several pieces of Cawdrey’s work are included in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Wildlife Art and also at Tulsa’s Gilcrease Museum and Prescott, Arizona’s Phippen Museum.) There are additional Cawdrey paintings—of a collection of tipis and of birds in a field—in the entryway and master bedroom, respectively.

Also in the main living area are pieces—from a ceremonial vest to a parfleche—of Native American beadwork. Most are circa the mid 1800s and from Plains Indian tribes. And then there’s the Charlie Russell painting hanging unobtrusively on the landing leading up to the loft overlooking the main living area. Not to be outdone, at the top of this landing is George Catlin’s 1847 painting, “Buffalo Chase.”

It is only next to artists like Russell and Catlin that sculptures by Dave McGary and Jim Gilmore are relegated to supporting roles. There are several pieces by each of these artists in this home’s art collection.

It won’t just be this home’s art collection that stuns you. The eastern wall of the main living area is all glass, looking out on a neighborhood park (one of town’s hidden gems), Crystal Butte, and, in the far distance the highest peaks of the Gros Ventre Mountains. A covered deck here is perfect for summer breakfast—it is the first area of this house to get morning sun. The kitchen is professional grade and high windows above the working counter space provide lovely natural light.

This home has a second large deck off the upstairs loft. Not many homes in downtown Jackson can claim unobstructed views of the Tetons, but this one can. May Park offers convenient access to all that downtown Jackson has to offer, while only a 25-30 minute drive from Teton Village.
