Down a quiet, tree-lined lane – just minutes from the slopes, market and shops of The Pines – stands Mountain Haven. Acres of quiet woods and a broad, shady lawn encircle the house, making it feel secluded and serene. It is a true family retreat, an idyll, serenaded in summertime by birdsong and the splashing of a secret stream. In autumn, after the golden aspen leaves have sifted to the forest floor, the mountains emerge in all their glory. And in winter, the falling snow brings a deep hush. Tranquil and classic, simple and comfortable, Mountain Haven is a joy.

Mountain Haven has the peaceful, welcoming aesthetic of a 19th Century farmhouse. Its rooms are filled with light. A cheerful, wood-burning fireplace in the living room faces a comfortable quartet of sofa and armchairs; a vintage piano stands tuned and ready in a corner. French doors may be thrown open to the terrace, the lawns and the woods. On the other side of the fireplace, the deep couches and homey atmosphere of the den provide a relaxing spot for reading, movies or family game night.

Polished wood floors stretch seamlessly from the living room into the dining area and kitchen, where another set of French doors lead to the stone terrace, the picnic table and the grill. Dinner or cocktails outside are a fine opportunity for moose-watching – the majestic animals are fond of visiting the river willows fringing Mountain Haven’s clear stream, at dusk.

The roomy, open kitchen has a center island with a sink, a trio of barstools and loads of gleaming counter space for food prep and the unloading of groceries. A striking Black Forest cupboard holds pottery and linens. The mudroom, a walk-in pantry and an office extend from the kitchen, and light pours in throughout the day. Double pocket doors may be pulled shut to close off kitchen hubbub and make a sanctuary of the living room.

Mountain Haven has five handsome, carpeted bedrooms, all sunny and full of an easy elegance. The master bedroom is centered on a king size, Shaker-style four poster bed; a writing desk, a bedside table and reading lights stand to either side. A television faces the bed. In the master’s private bathroom, there is both a clawfoot soaking tub and a separate shower. Double mirrors hang over the vanity.

Three snug guest bedrooms on the first floor share a bathroom with a tub/shower combination. Their windows frame woods and mountaintops: the Grand Teton, Rendezvous Mountain, the Gondola station, impossibly high. Two laundry centers – one upstairs and one down – provide easy cleanup for an entire family of outdoor sports-lovers.

A sweet child’s bedroom, all in airy pastels, is on the first floor. The double bed is covered with a flowered quilt, and a well-stocked bookcase forms the headboard and provides storage space for treasures found or brought from home. This bedroom has a powder room of its own.

A sunroom, lush with flowers and greenery, stays deliciously warm and fragrant even on the iciest winter day. Finally, above Mountain Haven’s three-car garage is a high-ceilinged private apartment, with a queen-size bed, a full kitchen, a living area, a full bath, and an office area. The apartment is a perfect retreat for visiting friends or grandparents, or anyone who prefers a bit of privacy and independence.

Mountain Haven is an ideal family retreat; close to everything, lacking nothing; with room to pitch a ball, play in the stream and explore the secrets of the piney woods. From here, all of Jackson Hole is yours to discover.
