Riversong, Wilson, Wyoming Vacation Rental
The approach to Riversong leads through a copse of firs and aspen; at first view the house appears understated but it opens up grandly in back to embrace the heart-stopping view. From Riversongs stone terrace, the eye is drawn past the velvety lawn and its apron of wild grasses, along a long, weathered buck and rail fence that curves down the sage-covered hillside, and across the wide valley to the vast upward slope of the mountains. The Snake River runs through the valley like a blue satin ribbon; and from Riversong you can hear it flow.
The river runs as a theme through the house, as well: its rounded stones, tumbled along the river bottom for centuries, form Riversongs graceful hearths and chimneys. Walls of knotty pine in the living room chinked with mortar and burnished a glowing, mellow amber make the house feel as warm and friendly as fishing cabin. In every room, big plate glass widows follow the ceiling as high as they can go; the clear light and the Wyoming panorama outside pour in. A mullioned door leads out to the deck. A pair of soft leather couches the rich brown of an old copper penny face each other in front of the living room fire while a rams head looks on from above. In the dining room, upholstered chairs surround a dark wood table, and overhead, two antler chandeliers a nod to the pioneer traditions of Wyoming illuminate the room.
The open kitchen and family room, divided by a stone-topped bar and workspace, share a second river stone fireplace. This is the comfortable heart of the house, a space for conversation, cocktails, cooking, relaxing. Oil paintings in gilded frames hang on the walls; the dining area opens out just behind the sofa, and a door leads to the terrace, the picnic tables and the grill. Another Riversong hub, the rec room, waits on the second floor. Here a sturdy wood pool table, a tv, a keyboard, computer station, cocktail table and soft carpeting underfoot create a fine, congenial gathering spot.
The master suite is a big airy room warmed by a wood-burning stone fireplace. An elegant wood king-sized bed rests under a vaulted ceiling supported by thick wood beams. A glass door beside the massive picture window leads to a wood-railed balcony. The master suite has two bathrooms, one with a deep oval soaking tub topped by corner windows that look out over the Snake River, and a separate shower. Also on Riversongs top floor is a large guest bedroom. Here a big, rustic log bed gussied up with a pretty spread and a dust ruffle faces a window filled with aspen trees, and their round, whispering leaves tint the guest room walls green in summer and gold in fall. A decadent bathroom has a soaking tub and separate shower, double sinks, and a band of mirrors that reflects the swaying treetops outside the windows.
Riversong has three guest rooms on the ground floor: two are grouped about the downstairs living area where a fireplace, a flat-screen tv and a deeply comfortable sitting area wait. Both are simple, quiet bedrooms with private baths; each has a queen bed and a door to the terrace, hot tub and lawn. The final bedroom is a grand slam of a sleeping area a wonderful rustic bunkroom that can sleep six and has two bathrooms of its own, a galley kitchen and a door to the lawn. The bunk beds, built of dark stained wood with the bark left on, surround a huge sectional couch in traditional blue denim that could sleep two or three more on its own. The bunkroom is a hideout of sorts; it is not connected to the rest of the lower floor, but has its own staircase up to the service corridor making it all the more appealing to young visitors.
Outside, the air is filled with the rivers song and the high country breeze. The raised wood decks, the stonewalled terrace and the wide lawn are outfitted with cushioned, latticed wood chairs and chaises so that life can be lived, as much as possible, out-of-doors. The big hot tub is an inviting locus on a cold and starry night. Riversong is set in an outstanding location for journeys into the wilderness or into Jackson, both are equally easy to get to. The fly fishing, of course, is sublime from Riversongs door you can head for the river, where lives the cutthroat trout unique to the wide, swift-running Snake. In winter the vast landscape of white unfurling out from Riversongs backyard invites a whole host of snowy adventures, and some of the worlds best and most challenging skiing is just minutes away. Riversong is indeed a song of a house, a stronghold of warmth and welcome in a very, very beautiful world.
