Canyon Land, Teton Village, Wyoming Vacation Rental
Canyon Land is a modernist marvel of stone, redwood and pine, a monumental Shooting Star property that sits beautifully in its spectacular part of the world. The L-shaped house and the accompanying cottage surround a large courtyard, creating a private, exterior space; a wide stone patio extends off the back of the house, facing the rolling rangeland and the snow-capped spine of the Teton Range.
Canyon Land’s heavy front door opens, seemingly, right back outside again – across the long, high-ceilinged great room to double glass doors and big windows that frame the grasslands, the woods beyond and the great stony rise of No Name Peak.
Despite its superb design and expansive layout, Canyon Land is a family house: easy, comfortable, welcoming. The unfussy décor is a pleasing contrast to the wonder of the architecture. Painted spindle chairs and a pair of evening-blue couches are gathered around a cut stone, double-sided fireplace that rises to the ceiling and is a masterpiece of masonry, stones placed like blocks in a Mondrian painting. Three cast iron chandeliers hang like planets in the vast, barn-like space of the great room, casting a warm light over the living and dining spaces. At the glossy redwood dining table, tall, upholstered chairs seem to call for a dinner party – say the word, and The Clear Creek Group will send a chef to prepare anything from a chili-and-cornbread feast to a black tie birthday celebration.
A short corridor outfitted as a wet bar connects the great room to the kitchen. The kitchen is a delightful combination of Edwardian and state-of-the-art: a large, marble-topped island fronted by three leather bar stools stands in the center of the room, overhung by handsome industrial pendant lights; a pretty breakfast nook with an upholstered bench waits to the side. It is a gorgeous space - the cool, snowy marble highlighting the warmth of the hardwood floors, custom cabinetry, and the red brick tiling behind the range. William Morris blinds and upholstery buoy up the sleek silver of the SubZero fridge, the Viking range and the two sinks.
A second corridor off the kitchen serves as a butler’s pantry, and leads to a powder room, the laundry, office, mudroom and garage. The office is a lovely, cream-painted space with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and a long built-in desk. Windows look far down the valley. The tiled-floored mudroom is ample and cheery as well, with lots of space to sit and unlace boots, hang coats and store gear - and the laundry is, conveniently, right next door.
Canyon Land has two spacious wings, connected by two staircases that descend toward each other, and a long open landing above that crosses the living and dining areas like a great open bridge. In the north wing, the bunkroom and family room are on the lower floor.
The family room benefits from the other side of the double fireplace; sitting on the deep sectional couch or in one of the club chairs you can see right across the flames through to the dining room. A long flat screen television is mounted in a handsome floor-to-ceiling wood cabinet, and a wonderful, full-size shuffleboard table - and a billiards table as well - wait at the end of the room.
The bunkroom is a fantastic space: a sunny, six-berth hideout featuring beds both high and low (two of them are queen size beds), and lots of built-in shelves and drawers for storage. A bathroom off of the bunkroom is spacious and bright, with a walk-in shower, two sinks, and conveniently numbered towel hooks.
The light-as-air master bedroom is on the second floor of the north wing, with a 180-degree view so glorious it’s all but impossible to sleep in – though snowy white curtains may be pulled across the windows and the door to the private balcony to alleviate temptation. A four-poster bed, fitted in cream matelassé, does its best to compete. A pair of blue-and-white checked slipper chairs provide a peaceful spot to read or have a morning coffee.
